Murcia is the capital of the Spanish autonomous region of Murcia of the same name. It is also the capital of the comarca Huerta de Murcia. The city is located in southeastern Spain on the Segura River. It is the seventh largest city in Spain by population (about 460,000 inhabitants). The area is 881.86 square kilometers.
Murcia is inland, but after a relatively short drive you will soon be on the beaches of the southern Costa Blanca and the Costa Cálida. The town hall of Murcia is housed in the neoclassical Casa Consistorial. It is located in Plaza de la Glorieta, a square brightened by colorful flowers and fountains.
In Murcia you will find some interesting museums. We think, for example, of the Museo Ramón Gaya, named after the painter and writer born in Murcia. The permanent collection shows you not only his works, but also creations by fellow painters from the same generation. The Museo Salzillo is dedicated to the Baroque art of the famous Murcian sculptor Francisco Salzillo y Alcaraz.
