Information about Torrevieja

The city of Torrevieja is located in the province of Alicante, in the Spanish autonomous region of Valencia. You are here on the Costa Blanca, in the Vega Baja del Segura. About 85,000 people live in Torrevieja, which covers an area of 71.44 square kilometers. In terms of population, it is the third city in the province of Alicante. After your arrival you can travel smoothly from Alicante international airport to Torrevieja.

Torrevieja is best known as a destination with beautiful beaches and lots of sun. But the city also offers a wide range of activities for young and old, and some interesting cultural attractions. You can make trips in the area to Guardamar del Segura, Orihuela, Elche and Murcia. Do not hesitate and explore this special corner of the Costa Blanca from your home in Torrevieja.

What to do in Torrevieja?

Torrevieja does not have as long a history as many other towns and villages in the area. There used to be only a watchtower and a number of houses of salt miners. In 1803 King Charles IV gave permission to build houses there and the local government was moved to what is now Torrevieja. In 1829 there was an earthquake that razed Torrevieja to the ground. The city was then completely rebuilt and in 1931 received the title of "city". The salt trade was the driving force behind the local economy. Yet it took until 1954 before the final touches were put on the harbor. The salt from Torrevieja was and is mainly exported. Today, salt is still extracted in the Torrevieja salt works, which are among the most important in all of Europe.

A trip to the salt lakes of Torrevieja and La Mata can therefore be ticked off in your agenda. The pink color of the former lake creates a fairytale backdrop for an outing with young and old.  You will feel you are on a pink cloud when you spot flamingos. Both lakes are part of the Parque Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja, a nature reserve of great ecological value. You have already understood that salt plays an important role in and around Torrevieja, but you might want to learn more about it. In that case, you can visit the Museum of Sea and Salt (Museo del Mar y de la Sal), where you will get a special insight into the salt production in the region.

AdobeStock_67089500.jpegAnother big draw - if not the biggest - is the local beaches. The coastline of Torrevieja is no less than twenty kilometers long, which means that you can choose from several beautiful sandy strips and bays. One of the favorites of both Spaniards and tourists is Playa de la Mata. On this long stretch of fine sand, you will undoubtedly find a suitable spot for a day of enjoyment by the Mediterranean. There is a beach promenade, and there is certainly no shortage of restaurants and bars. Other popular sandy beaches in Torrevieja are Playa de los Locos, Playa del Cura and Playa de los Náufragos. For a quieter beach experience, visit Cala Ferris, a sandy and rocky cove with many exotic palm trees in the background.

The little ones will have the time of their lives in Torrevieja, and not just on the local beaches. For example, the water parks Aquopolis Torrevieja and Aquapark Flamingo are excellent places for a good portion of water fun. Especially when the temperature reaches pleasant heights in summer. Do not ignore the Jardín de las Naciones either. In this park you will find, among other things, a scale model of the map of Europe, a playground and a pond where you can sail with your children. End with a visit to the Albatros III Patrol Boat, where you experience life aboard a Spanish Navy submarine.

Other sights in Torrevieja that are worth seeing are the Iglesia Arciprestal de la Inmaculada Concepción, the Torre del Moro and the Museo de la Semana Santa Tomás Valcárcel. And finally, don't forget the Torrevieja market, because with 1200 stalls it is the largest in Spain!

Restaurants and bars in Torrevieja

AdobeStock_271723801 verkleind.jpgJust like in many cities in Spain, there is also a wide range of restaurants in Torrevieja where you can eat well. For a paella, a delicious piece of grilled meat or seafood, head to Restaurante Villasalada. Good to know is that they have special menus here for vegans, vegetarians or people with a gluten intolerance. You will find more delicacies from the Valencia region at El Pescador.

Is the location of a restaurant just as important to you as the food itself? Vela Centro is highly recommended. While you choose from the many tasty dishes on the extensive menu, you won't be able to take your eyes off the sparkling sea and beach. At Playa de los Locos you will find El Tiburón, where they serve you Mediterranean flavors with Latin American influences. For delicious fresh pizzas with a view of the sea, Pizza Nº 1 is the right place. This Italian restaurant on Playa del Cura has long been run with heart and soul by the Schinello family from Calabria. And that passion is clearly reflected in the food they serve.

Other restaurants in Torrevieja that we can definitely recommend are Tasca Nueva Bahía (tapas, meat and fish plates), La Fusión (fresh sushi) and Vela Beach La Mata. Explore Torrevieja and indulge your taste buds.

As an avid golfer, you will undoubtedly want to practice your favorite sport during your sun-drenched stay in Torrevieja. And that is also possible at the many golf clubs that you will find in the vicinity of the city. Weather in Torrevieja

The climate of Torrevieja is without a doubt one of the greatest assets of the city and its surroundings. Thanks to the local salt lakes, the air is full of minerals. That air and the mild temperatures create a microclimate that is very beneficial for various ailments, including rheumatism. So beneficial that Torrevieja is one of the healthiest places in the world to live, according to the World Health Organization. Every year in the city you can enjoy about 320 days of sunshine a year, with a pleasant annual average of 18 degrees. Winters are pleasantly mild and summers warm with often a gentle sea breeze that provides cooling. Moreover, it remains dry for most of the year in these parts of Spain. What more could you want?
