In the thirteenth century, Alfonso X managed to conquer the kingdom of Murcia. Los Alcázares belonged to the Crown of Castile from then on and was repopulated with Christians. The town then served as the supply port for the city of Murcia. At the end of the Middle Ages, defense towers were built on the coast of the Mar Menor against attacks by Barbary pirates. A good example is the Torre del Rame. This tower is of Arab origin, but was rebuilt under the Crown of Castile to protect the coast against pirate raids.
The core of Los Alcázares was located on the "La Cerca" estate of José María Fontes Alemán, the Marquis of Ordoño. At the end of the nineteenth century, he decided to divide his estate among farmers by means of leasehold. In 1905 the Hotel Balneario de la Encarnación was built. Together with the construction of the first maritime airport in Spain, this resulted in demographic and economic growth. Los Alcázares emerged as a summer destination for the inland and bourgeoisie, and became an important fishing and trading place. In 1983, after a long process, Los Alcázares finally officially became a municipality and the youngest municipality in the Murcia region. Parts of Torre-Pacheco and San Javier were merged for this purpose.
