Orihuela Costa is the coastal area of the city of Orihuela on the Costa Blanca. It is located in the province of Alicante, in the Spanish autonomous region of Valencia. In 1437 Alfons V proclaimed Orihuela a city. In 1564 the diocese of Orihuela was born and separated from the diocese of Cartagena.
In the War of the Spanish Succession Orihuela sided with Charles of Austria. Orihuela was a province itself at one point, but would later belong to the province of Alicante, then Murcia and then again Alicante.
