Orihuela Costa is the coastal area of the city of Orihuela on the Costa Blanca. It is located in the province of Alicante, in the Spanish autonomous region of Valencia. The resort is located just a little further south than Torrevieja. The major cities of Murcia, Cartagena, Elche and Alicante are easily accessible by car from here. About 22,000 people live in Orihuela Costa, which is characterized by large urbanisations.

What to do?
The city of Orihuela has a long history in which different cultures have played an important role. The Romans and the Visigoths, among others, have won the day. At the time of the Romans the city was called Orcelis. The area of Orihuela has often been the subject of disputes between different kingdoms due to its location. In 1437 Alfons V proclaimed Orihuela a city. In 1564 the diocese of Orihuela was born and separated from the diocese of Cartagena.
In the War of the Spanish Succession Orihuela sided with Charles of Austria. Orihuela was a province itself at one point, but would later belong to the province of Alicante, then Murcia and then again Alicante. In the beautiful historic city center you get a unique insight into the long and turbulent history of the city.
As you explore the center, you will be able to admire many religious buildings. Just think of the cathedral, several beautiful churches, the Santuario de Monserrate and the Convento de Santo Domingo. These are all gems with a fascinating architectural style. Another beautiful building is the Palacio de Rubalcava. Formerly owned by the Marquises of Rubalcava, this palace was bought by the Municipality of Orihuela in 2010.
Close to the Sierra de Orihuela mountain range you will find the Palmeral de Orihuela, the second largest palm grove in Europe. It is a wonderful place to relax, to stroll around or to immerse yourself in the exotic atmosphere of Spain. You can easily combine the Palmeral with an adventurous hike in the mountains of the Sierra de Orihuela. Not far from the palm grove is Pinar de Bonanza. This is a recreational area where you can enjoy a pleasant picnic in the middle of nature.
Also in terms of culture there is more than enough in Orihuela. The city has several interesting museums where fascinating themes are discussed. Visit the Casa-Museo de Miguel Hernandez and discover the place where the eponymous Orihuela-born poet and playwright lived from 1914 to 1934. In the Archaeological Museum (Museo Arqueológico) you can admire objects from different periods, from the Paleolithic to the modern era. For those who love the festivities around Semana Santa (Holy Week), the Museo de Semana Santa is a must-visit.
Not only in the center, but also in the surroundings of Orihuela is full of traces of an exciting past. The imposing castle of Monteagudo is a true gem that dates all the way back to Islamic times in Spain. It stands on an impressive rock and towers far above everything and everyone. Can not be missed!

The local coastline is extremely attractive and bursting with great beaches.
