The Mar Menor is a lagoon in the autonomous community of Murcia, in southeastern Spain. It is (almost) separated from the Mediterranean Sea by the land strip of La Manga del Mar Menor. In total, the Mar Menor covers an area of no less than 180 square kilometers. The coastline is 73 kilometers long and counts one dream beach after the other. There are several small islands in the lagoon.

The Mar Menor is without a doubt one of the most special places in all of Spain. It is a holiday paradise with countless recreational opportunities and attractive natural areas around it. There are also several interesting cities in the area, such as Cartagena, Murcia and Torrevieja. Culture, nature and recreation are the ingredients of an unforgettable stay on the Mar Menor.

What to do?

In the course of history, the Iberians, the Phoenicians and the Arabs visited the area of the Mar Menor. The Muslims called it "Mar Chico" and turned the place Los Alcázares into a place of relaxation. Nearby are also watchtowers built to counter the threat of sea pirates from North Africa. For a long time, the Mar Menor was mainly concerned with fishing and salt production, but later villages appeared on the banks with the holiday homes of residents from the Huerta de Murcia area.

As mentioned before, the Mar Menor has a lot to offer. Lovers of sun, sea and sand have come to the right place in this part of Spain. The long coastline of the Mar Menor is home to countless long sandy beaches where you can relax. These are often bordered by an attractive boulevard with southern palm trees. What is special about the Mar Menor is that the lagoon is only seven meters deep at most. As a result, the water can easily warm up and you can take a pleasant dip early in the year.

The Mar Menor is also the perfect place for those who want to be a little more active. On the water you can go wind or kite surfing, paddle boarding, pedal boats and much more. During a snorkeling or diving session in the Mar Menor or the Mediterranean, you will discover the fascinating marine life on the Costa Cálida. A fantastic dive site is Cabo de Palos, where many shipwrecks are hidden off the coast.

Extensive gastronomic offer. As a nature lover, do you prefer to stay ashore? Then you can explore the various nature parks in the area. On the north side of the Mar Menor you will find the nature reserve Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar. Go exploring and discover salt lakes and special birds. Nearby you will also find the Lo Pagán mud baths, which are very popular for their beneficial effects. South of the lagoon, you can visit the Calblanque Regional Natural Park for endless hiking or mountain biking fun.

Cartagena is an excellent setting to sample a hearty portion of culture. This city has a rich history and that translates into a beautiful historical heritage. The Roman theater steals the show. Other cities that you can easily visit from your home on the Mar Menor are Murcia and Torrevieja. Orihuela is also a must, as is Cabo de Palos with its lighthouse from the nineteenth century. Do you like to go shopping? Then you can visit the shopping centers Zenia Boulevard (Orihuela Costa), Nueva Condomina (Murcia) and Espacio Mediterráneo (Cartagena).
